At Moffitt Cancer Center, kidney cancer clinical trials are an integral part of our efforts to improve cancer treatments and the lives of our patients. Clinical trials are studies that explore the effectiveness of new treatments for fighting cancer. In fact, all treatments that are currently considered standard treatments were once available only through clinical trials. Participating in a clinical trial gives patients access to treatments that aren’t available elsewhere and also allows them to explore new ways of treating their cancer that can enhance their quality of life. A patient does not need a referral to consult with our Urologic Oncology Program about participating in one of our clinical trials. There are several factors that are taken into account when determining who is eligible to participate, including age, the type of cancer, general health and any past treatments received. As such, the dynamics of your individual cancer and lifestyle may lead a physician to suggest that you take part in a clinical trial. If so, your physician will discuss with you the details of the particular trial in depth. You can trust that our clinical trials maintain patient health and safety as the top priorities. In fact, new drugs and therapies that are in the clinical trial phase have already gone through rigorous testing to ensure they are safe for use. Additionally, you can opt out at any time. This remains true even if you have already signed a consent form.
