Moffitt Cancer Center offers clinical trials for melanoma patients, including individuals from out-of-town areas like St. Petersburg, Florida. These trials can be beneficial to both the patients participating in them and to the medical community. Clinical trials provide patients with the opportunity to access some of the most promising new treatments that may not be available elsewhere. These trials also help Moffitt advance the quality and standards of care for cancer patients.
At Moffitt, our melanoma clinical trials may involve research on new diagnostic tests, surgical procedures, chemotherapy drug combinations or other treatment options. Individuals who are interested in participating in a clinical trial are carefully screened to determine eligibility. Our team will make a determination based on many factors, including:
- Type, location and stage of cancer
- Patient’s age and general health
- Treatment history and response to prior treatments, if applicable
Patients from St. Petersburg or other parts of Florida who are eligible and interested in a clinical trial will be provided with information on all aspects of what the study involves, how it will be conducted, any time commitments or other requirements of the patient and the potential risks and benefits of the new treatment. Additionally, any eligible patient is free to choose whether or not to participate in the trial and can choose to stop participation at any time.
Moffitt Cancer Center is committed to advancing research and treatment of many different types of cancer, including melanoma, through our robust clinical trials program. Because of this commitment, we have been named a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute and are the only cancer center based in Florida to have earned this designation. We help our patients receive the individualized treatment and care they need, whether through a clinical trial or through other advanced treatment options.
