When skin cancer forms in tissues other than melanocytes, or pigment cells, the cancer is referred to as “nonmelanoma.” In other words, while melanoma forms in the melanocytes, nonmelanoma starts in other cells of the skin, including basal cells in the lower layer of the skin; squamous cells that form the surface of the skin; and Merkel cells, which aid in the sense of detailed, or light, touch.
