Study Title

Motivating Smoking Cessation and Relapse Prevention among Lung Cancer Patients: Helping and Empowering pAtients for Living a life Smoke-free (Project HEALS)


The purpose of the study is to gather information that will be used to adapt a smoking cessation intervention for lung cancer patients


Primary Aim: Examine feasibility outcomes of interest including study eligibility, ability to recruit and retain participants in the study, intervention delivery rates, and participant satisfaction with the UC+MAPS+RP treatment. Exploratory Aim: Estimate the efficacy of UC+MAPS+RP compared to UC in facilitating abstinence from smoking toward development of a full-scale RCT.




Inclusion Criteria

  • Age >18
  • Smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime
  • Current smoking (defined as self-report of any smoking, even a puff, in the past 30 days)
  • Diagnosis of lung cancer
  • Able to read/write English
  • Not currently enrolled in a smoking cessation program
  • Have a working phone
  • Valid home address

  • Exclusion Criteria

  • Current use of tobacco cessation medications
  • Another household member enrolled in the study
  • Contraindication of nicotine patch use unless under the supervision of a physician as advised by project staff
  • Moffitt clinical trial participant at time of enrollment
  • Diagnosed with distant metastases
