Overview
Cancer Focus: Basal Cell Carcinoma, Head and Neck Cancer, Melanoma, Merkel Cell Carcinoma, Oral Cavity or Throat Cancer, Sarcoma, Skin Cancer (Nonmelanoma), Throat Cancer, Tongue Cancer Dr. Harrison is the Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Moffitt Cancer Center. He is also Deputy Physician in Chief at Moffitt. In this role, he is part of the Moffitt Medical Group Leadership team. Dr. Harrison is also Moffitt's Vice President, Chief Partnership Officer. In this capacity, he works to develop multifaceted partnership and strategic alliances that advance the cancer center’s strategic goals and increase patient access to the institution. He received his MD degree from the S.U.N.Y. Downstate Medical Center College of Medicine. He completed a Radiation Oncology Residency at Yale University School of Medicine, Yale-New Haven Hospital; and also served as Chief Resident. Following residency, Dr. Harrison joined the faculty at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. While at Memorial, he was the Chief of the Brachytherapy Service in the Department of Radiation Oncology as well as the Institutional Program Leader of the multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancer Disease Management Team. He joined the Continuum Health Partners (Beth Israel Medical Center, St. Luke's and Roosevelt Hospitals and NY Eye and Ear Infirmary) in 1997. At Continuum, Dr. Harrison served as Chairman and Gerald J. Friedman Endowed Chair of Radiation Oncology and Physician-in-Chief of Continuum Cancer Centers of New York. Dr. Harrison was also appointed as Professor of Radiation Oncology and Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He has served as Chairman of the Board and President of ASTRO, the leading radiation oncology professional society in the country, as well as President of the American Brachytherapy Society and President of the International Society of Intraoperative Radiation Therapy. The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) named Dr. Harrison as a 2017 ASTRO Gold Medalist, the highest honor bestowed upon ASTRO members who have made outstanding lifetime contributions in the field of radiation oncology. Dr. Harrison serves on the Board of Directors of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), where he also has been elected to the Executive Committee. Dr Harrison is the senior editor of the textbook Head and Neck Cancer: A Multidisciplinary Approach, now in its fourth edition. He is also a co-editor of Intraoperative Irradiation: Techniques and Results, now in its second edition. Dr Harrison has received numerous awards including the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, Clarence Dennis Society Prize, and the Henscke Award for Brachytherapy, the Physician of Excellence Award from the American Cancer Society and the Boyer Prize for Biomedical Research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
